Comprehensive STS guide published

Jan 03 2014

The first ship-to-ship transfer (STS) guide to contain advice on all types of wet bulk was published at the end of last year.

This guide, published by Witherby Publishing, supersedes the fourth edition of the ‘Ship to Ship Transfer Guide (Petroleum) issued in 2005, the second edition of the ‘Ship to Ship Transfer Guide (Liquefied Gases), published in 1995 and the ‘LNG Ship to Ship Transfer Guide’, which came out in 2011.

It was written for Masters, marine superintendents and others, such as STS service providers and transfer organisers, involved in the planning and execution of an STS operation.

The publisher said that particular attention had been given to effective operational planning, plus the question of risk assessments, vessel compatibility and the effective management of workloads to minimise fatigue.

Recommendations contained in the guide also take into consideration the use of barges in cargo transfers and of vessels, both at sea and in port.

Witherby pointed out that this guide is not intended for offshore exploration and production activities, where normally local regulations are in force. However, the guide may be of use to those operators formulating their own rules and regulations.

This guide was sponsored by the Chemical Distribution Institute (CDI), International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) and the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO).
