LR and HGS collaborate on digital solutions

Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Hyundai Global Service (HGS) have announced a new collaboration to deliver added value to the shipping industry through digital solutions.

This will start with the appraisal of HGS’s Smart Ship System as ‘Digital Class Ready’.

LR will assess HGS’s Smart Ship System by applying its latest Digital Ship’s ShipRight Procedure and Digital Compliance Framework to enable shipmanagers and operators using the system on board ships to get class items credited remotely for selected items.

HGS and LR will trial the system, which will be installed on a ship, and test its readiness to comply with data-driven class requirements. These tests will prove how the chosen surveyable item would become eligible to be class item credited based on data streamed from the HGS Smart Ship System, remotely, LR said.

HGS and LR also intend to create a digital interface between HGS’s Smart Ship System and LR to allow class items crediting to be undertaken digitally. Additional operational efficiencies and improved performance could be gained by shipmanagers and operators through data-driven classification and data-driven maintenance strategies.

Kyoungsoo Ahn, HGS’s Director for Digital Transformation Business, said: “HGS believes that digitalisation will bring substantial benefits to shipmanagers and operators, our smart ship system is designed to help our clients improve their performance and cut their costs like never before. We believe this collaboration will be a starting point for digital technology to record tangible numbers in the shipping industry.”

Luis Benito, LR’s Innovation and Co-Creation Director for Marine & Offshore, said: “Shipping can move forward on its digitalisation pathway through the adoption of smart ship systems and additionally owners and operators could gain further understanding to enhance their ship’s operational performance.

“LR is here to collaborate with the industry by helping our customers gain value from digitalisation and 4.0 technologies that are readily available. This collaboration with HGS allows LR to deliver augmented value to our customers and we trust it constitutes a foundation for data-driven classification and digital solutions that will improve operational and business performance for shipowners and operators,” he said.
