Zvezda hands over first Aframax-type tanker

Sep 09 2021

The first Russian Aframax-type oil tanker – Vladimir Monomakh - was handed over to the customer, Rosnefteflot.

The ceremony of vessel delivery was held at Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex in the Far East. Vladimir Monomakh is the lead vessel of a series of Aframax type tankers. Tankers are designed for the transportation of crude oil and oil products in an unrestricted navigation area. Previously, such vessels were not constructed in Russia.

Vladimir Monomakh was launched ahead of contract terms in May, 2020. Keel laying of the tanker was carried out on September 11, 2018 in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The crew and trial crew of Zvezda, SSK, together with the shipyard specialists completed the plan of sea trials in full, having gained the most important experience in planning and organizing works at sea on new Aframax-type vessels. All systems of the vessel worked normally. Control presentation of the mechanisms was held to the RMRS and the vessel's customer-Rosnefteflot (a subsidiary of Rosneft, specializing in chartering and port support, implementation of shipbuilding projects and management of the sea and river fleet).

In the near future, the Vladimir Monomakh will leave the shipyard's water area and make its first voyage.

Aframax-type tankers are called ‘green’. They were created in line with high environmental safety standards. Main and auxiliary power plants can operate both on traditional and environmentally friendly fuel-liquified natural gas which is in line with the new regulations to limit emissions of sulfur oxides and greenhouse gases in the Baltic and Northern Sea.

The tanker length is 250 meters, the width is 44 meters, the deadweight is 114 thousand tons, the speed is 14,6 knots, the ice class - ICE-1A.  The vessel has comfortable conditions for the crew: there is a sauna, swimming pool, gym, each team member has his own cabin, high-speed Internet.

The Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex is being created on the basis of the Far Eastern shipyard Zvezda by a Consortium of investors led by Rosneft on behalf of the President of Russia. Nowadays, Zvezda portfolio of orders comprises 12 Aframax-type tankers, of which 10 were ordered by Rosnefteflot.
