Pole Star improves tracking system

Mar 31 2014

Pole Star Space Applications has released Fleet Management (FM) 2.0, the company’s latest web-based tracking solution.

It is free of charge for Pole Star’s existing shipowner, operator and charterer customers.

With a new user-interface, new and enhanced features, FM 2.0 delivers improved usability and efficiency for its users. “With the release of version 2.0, we have given FM a brand new look and feel. It’s more modern and easier to use than ever before. Plus, we have added some brand new features and enhanced some familiar ones,” said Peter Davies, Chief Technology Officer.

FM 2.0’s new features and enhancements include:

  • Mobile-optimised user interface allowing users to access their account on a smartphone, tablet, desktop, laptop or other internet enabled device.
  • Three new map options, including: street, hybrid and satellite maps (provided by Mapbox), in addition to FM’s original C-Map charts.
  • Enhanced weather graphics, which can be overlaid over the map to provide situational awareness for planning and operations (provided by TideTech).
  • Improved zone tools that make creating zones even easier.
  • A new quick search feature, which allows users to search for a vessel and automatically locate it on the map or fleet list.

Odfjell Tankers uses Pole Star’s Fleet Management service to monitor its fleet. “Fleet Management has helped us to improve operational efficiency and achieve cost savings by monitoring the vessel’s positions and speed,” said Erik Hjortland, Odfjell Tankers’ manager of fleet performance. “We look forward to using the new interface and to the benefits that mobile access will bring.”

FM 2.0 uses new technologies that will improve performance and ease of use, Pole Star claimed. The new interface has been built using HTML-5 for a clean, modern user experience and better mobile accessibility. It also uses responsive design, which means that the application is automatically optimised for the user’s screen size and orientation.

FM is an integrated fleet tracking solution that enables shipowners, operators and charterers to monitor their fleets accurately and reliably using the ship's Inmarsat-C, or a dedicated Pole Star terminal. It is currently used to track more than 6,500 vessels.
