KR addresses fuel changeover problems

Jan 30 2015

The Korean Register (KR) has launched a software program to assist vessels with fuel oil changeover when complying with the low sulphur regulations.

This new software assesses the fuel consumption at the actual operating speed to calculate the time required to switch to a low sulphur fuel.

In general, it has been the practice to rely on the Chief Engineer’s experience,

which KR has found often results in the vessel burning more high cost fuel than is necessary.

Called fuel oil change over (FOCO) - the software gives more accurate timings in order to save fuel and cost.

The software also provides accurate technical data that can be used for port state control reports if changeover times are questioned.
