Lifeboat accident claims another fatality

Nov 28 2014

One seafarer was killed and two others were seriously injured last week in a reported lifeboat accident while a vessel was off the Elbe River estuary.

The German Society for Sea Rescue Service reported that its Bremen unit responded last Friday morning to a report that one man was overboard and two seriously injured on board a lifeboat from the Hong Kong-flagged oil and chemical tanker ‘MTM Westport’ about 11 miles southeast of Helgoland.

Rescue boats arrived on the scene to attend to the injured while a search and rescue helicopter plucked a man from the water.

One of the sailors died despite efforts to resuscitate him by doctor who was flown to the scene. The two injured seafarers were flown to a local hospital for treatment.

Local reports alleged that the boat fell from a height of about 11 m. The incident was still under investigation at the time of writing.
