Martek in satcoms move

Mar 02 2018

Martek Marine has introduced SeaCell, which is claimed to be a robust and reliable system that uses 4G technology to provide 20Mbps high speed internet for up to 20 km at sea, even when the vessel is moving.

SeaCell’s airtime costs are also claimed to be much cheaper than VSAT and the system can be connected to existing communications so that it can be retrofitted in under four hours.

Capt Nick Allen of Rix Shipping said it was “The best internet system I’ve seen on a ship.”

As well as making monitoring, security and inventory systems more reliable, it can also transmit live footage in hazardous situations and help to alleviate some of the mental health issues that are becoming an increasing problem with today’s isolated and multi-national crews, the company said.

Martek claimed that as many as two thirds of vessels don’t have any form of internet access and only 12% have access for the crew. Those fortunate enough to have connectivity are forced to rely on expensive maritime VSAT, which lacks in speed and bandwidth.
