Mortensen quits BW

Sep 28 2018

Singapore-based BW Group’s CEO Carsten Mortensen has resigned.

He decided to step down from his position with immediate effect on Monday citing personal reasons.

Andreas Sohmen-Pao, BW Group Chairman, said that Mortensen had made significant contributions to the Group during his three years as CEO.

He said: “Carsten and I have had a great partnership working closely together to grow the company, but the non-stop travel and living on two continents eventually reached a natural limit for him.

“We are very grateful to Carsten for his contributions and wish him all the best for the future,” he said.

In other appointment news, Gernot Ruppelt, Ardmore’s CCO, was recently elected as chairman of INTERTANKO’s Worldscale & Markets Committee.

This committee provides liaison and dialogue with members and with tanker industry partners to drive shared goals of commercial sustainability and transparency, and for ethical practice and industry progress.

In addition it maintains an open and positive communication with the Worldscale Association.

Commenting on his new role, Gernot said: “I’m honoured by the appointment and look forward to building on the successes of the committee so far. I will be working in close partnership with my fellow committee members and INTERTANKO staff to drive for further progress, including evolving the objectives of the committee in line with the changed market environment.”

Elsewhere, Ulrika Laurin and James O'Shaughnessy were elected to the board of Frontline at last week’s AGM to fill vacancies.

Laurin was the executive chairman of shipowner Anglo-Atlantic Steamship and the chairman of Laurin Shipping, a shipmanagement company.

She has also served as the CFO of Anglo-Atlantic Steamship and as commercial manager of Laurin Maritime (UK).

Prior to that, she worked with fund manager Tufton Oceanic and with management consultant Karlöf & Partners.

O'Shaughnessy was an executive vice president, chief accounting officer and corporate controller of Axis Capital Holdings, a post he has held since March, 2012.

Prior to that O'Shaughnessy has, amongst other positions, served as CFO in the the Bermuda operations of Flagstone Reinsurance Holdings and as chief accounting officer and senior vice president of Scottish Re Group and CFO of XL Re at XL Group.

Finally, Britannia Maritime Consultants has announced two senior appointments, as part of the company’s expansion into the marine casualty response market.

Mike Hammond will head up a new claims and insurance department, while Stephan Dimke will provide technical support for digital navigation issues.

Hammond has worked in marine claims both for shipping companies, and more recently as the claims manager for an International Group P&I club with a focus on the Asia/Pacific region.

Stephan Dimke, formerly with Transas and currently the managing director of Chartworld Asia Pacific, brings with him a reputation as a global expert in digital navigation.

He recently addressed the NAV 18 navigation symposium organised by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
