New Manila ops centre for Weathernews

Japan-based Weathernews has opened a new operations centre in the Philippines.

The company officially launched its operations for their voyage cost-optimising services this month from the new Manila Operations Centre (MOC).

Weathernews is involved in reducing vessel fuel consumption while maintaining safety and punctuality for cost effective voyages by way of optimum ship routeing (OSR) simulation models, which calculate the most efficient rev/min for vessels while also taking into account weather and current factors.

Currently, Weathernews provides route advisory service to over 2,000 vessels worldwide. However, with a shipping market in recession, demand for these services has increased, the company claimed and, in response, Weathernews established the new Manila centre.

The MOC is staffed by English-speaking locals hand picked from the maritime industry in the Philippines, a country that provides 70% of the human resources in the global shipping industry.

By establishing this new MOC, Weathernews said that it expected to increase the productivity, efficiency and stability of its evolving route advisory services.

The new centre will support other operations centres in Chiba (Japan), Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and Oklahoma (US).

The addition of the MOC is expected to increase capacity of Weathernews’ global network to over 2,600 vessels by next Spring, the company said.
