Obituaries - Giles Noakes - Aristidis Alafouzos

May 19 2017

It is with deep regret that we have to report BIMCO’s Head of Maritime Security, Giles Noakes, passed away on 10th May.

He joined BIMCO in January, 2008 and made a significant and lasting contribution to the development of maritime security across the industry, BIMCO said.

Noakes was well known and highly regarded, actively and expertly advising shipowners, operators, shipping associations, military, non-governmental organisations and government departments on maritime security issues and he was particularly instrumental in the development of Best Management Practices for protection against Somalia based piracy.

Philippe Louis-Dreyfus, BIMCO president & chairman said: “This is tragic news, we send Giles’ family our very sincerest condolences, Giles was a wonderful man and I was happy and proud to have worked with him at BIMCO. We all share his family’s sadness, they are in our thoughts at this very difficult time. Giles will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”

Greek shipping magnate, Aristidis Alafouzos, has also recently passed away aged 93.

He was the founder of Glafki (Hellas) Maritime and tanker concern Kyklades Maritime.

He was also the proprietor of the daily newspaper Kathimerini, which he acquired in 1988.

Born on Santorini Island in 1924, Alafouzos graduated as an engineer from the Athens Technical University. He started his first company in 1956 and first undertook major infrastructure and hotel construction projects before founding his first shipping company in 1964.

In 1985, he took advantage of the shipping slump and invested in tankers, forming  Kyklades Maritime.
