PSM gains special type approval

Mar 06 2015

Marine gauging specialist PSM Instrumentation has gained the new ‘Mutual Recognition’ marine type approval standard for its ICT 1000 hydrostatic level transmitter.

The certification was awarded by DNV GL.

Mutual Recognition approval has been adopted as common practice by all IACS members for specific equipment types. Each country or geographic region has its own classification society responsible for marine standards and the standards themselves are very similar across each body.

Until the advent or Mutual Recognition, naval architects, system integrators and supply companies had to ensure their proposed products met the relevant classification societies’ needs and manufacturers were obliged to obtain type approval from each society. This led to an increase in complexity and administration with no real benefit to the customer.

“Following requests from our customers who operate with all of the recognised classification societies, we are delighted to now offer this global approval,” said Mark Jones, PSM sales director. “It represents a major step forward in co-operation between the global standards organisations and is intended to increasingly cover other products over time. We hope that this will allow our customers to simplify their supply chain activities, with the associated reduction in costs and lead times.”
