Shipboard paint maintenance e-learning modules introduced

Oct 05 2018

In co-operation with Seagull Maritime, paint and coating suppliers, Jotun, has developed e-learning modules to address on board paint maintenance, with an emphasis on in-service treatments.

One of the best ways to combat corrosion in salt water is with the correct application of paint, the companies said.

While major treatments usually take place in the repair yard and form part of the drydock budget, in-service maintenance is essential to limit ongoing potential deterioration that can have a real impact on long-term costs.

In addition to extending the life of a vessel, a well-maintained ship creates a better impression with owners, charterers and inspectors.

By collaborating with Jotun, one of the worlds leading provider of coating solutions in the marine industry, we are confident that these new hands-on e-learning modules will assist managers and crew members to improve on board paint maintenance.

In todays maritime operations, sustainability and cost reduction are topics we see on every agenda. By doing the work properly, these costs will be reduced, and by using the best coating solutions, sustainability will be maintained,Roger Ringstad, Seagull Maritime managing director said.

If paint maintenance is not carried out properly, it is a waste of both time and money. Thorough surface preparation is critical and a good application technique is essential.

These modules will increase the understanding of painting in a marine environment and assist in training a crew in the safe and effective application of paint, Seagull said.

Subject areas that have particular focus in this six-part series are:

*   Paint technology and coating life-cycle.

By having a well planned and executed on board maintenance programme, the appearance and the performance of the coating will meet the expectations of both the crew member using it, and the owners who invest in it.The ship will be a more attractive proposition to charterers and will be more likely to pass audits and inspections, explained  Stine Floberg, Global Technical Training Manager, Marine and Protective Coatings, Jotun.
