Tanker project in‘Green’ coastal shipping programme

Included in the so called Norwegian Green Coastal Shipping Programme five pilot projects is a shuttle tanker. This particular project will be led by Teekay Tankers.

DNV GL and 25 partners from the Norwegian maritime industry and the Norwegian authorities will be responsible for the five projects. The programme aims to encourage the research and implementation of green technology concepts in the country’s shipping sector.

The pilot projects include several different ship types and infrastructure, including the shuttle tanker, with an emphasis on alternative fuel concepts. “When we launched the Green Coastal Shipping Programme, we said we wanted to make Norway a world showcase for green coastal shipping. With these five pioneering pilot projects we are well on our way,” said programme director, Narve Mjøs.

The Teekay-led project will involve looking into the technical aspects of using batteries and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a shuttle tanker.

Battery technology has not been used on this vessel type thus far and the project will explore how it could help to optimise operations and reduce the need for installed power, the class society said. The project partners will also look at the possible use of batteries as a ‘spinning reserve’.

Following this, the project will also review new technological solutions for utilising VOCs produced on board. They are produced by capturing and condensing the recoverable gasses generated during offshore loading.

Using the liquid VOCs for on board power generation could reduce total fuel consumption and the environmental impact of the vessel, DNV GL said.
