INTERTANKO launches Guide to ESG Reporting in Tanker Shipping

Jul 29 2022

INTERTANKO has launched a Guide to ESG Reporting in Tanker Shipping, offering Members comprehensive guidance on developing ESG Reports in the absence of an established ESG framework within the tanker industry.

With an increasing number of INTERTANKO’s Members developing long-term sustainability strategies based on the environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles, INTERTANKO’s Council agreed in May that there is a need for guidance to Members in developing ESG Reporting and sustainability policies. In so doing, it was also agreed that an ESG Reporting framework that was specific to the tanker industry should also be developed.

Leading ESG Standards offer metrics and topics relevant for shipping, but are not specifically applicable to the tanker industry. Furthermore, there is a lack of accurate and meaningful guidance for the application of the main ESG reporting standards to tanker shipping. Recognising this, a Working Group consisting of over 30 INTERTANKO Members gathered information and shared their experience and understanding of ESG reporting principles, to develop guidelines and mapping tools for INTERTANKO Members. This will assist Member companies with establishing a foundation from which to develop or further build upon their ESG reporting policy.
