UAE class society up and running

Dec 13 2013

On 1st December, the first UAE flag-raising ceremony was held on board the 1995-built Aframax ‘Energena’ while she underwent maintenance at Drydocks World in Dubai.

This was the first commercial ship classed in the UAE by TASNEEF (Emirates Authority for Classification). The 95,500 dwt tanker is managed by Gulf Stolt Ship Management and has become the first commercial vessel to sail under the UAE flag.

TASNEEF was established in 2012 and is the first classification society in the Arab world.

Drydocks World and TASNEEF signed a MoU for a partnership in August 2013. Under the MoU, TASNEEF will have access to classification and other statutory activities on repair, newbuild and conversion projects at the yard.

The services provided by the new class society will include technical activities, such as surveys, inspection & testing of material, machinery, components and equipments on board vessels.

His Excellency Khamis Juma Buamim, chairman of Drydocks World & Maritime World said; “We are delighted with this accomplishment and the co-operation with TASNEEF for this region’s first intitiative. A void has now been filled with TASNEEF stepping in and this will contribute greatly towards the development of the shipping industry in the region.

“While initial operations will focus on regional markets, there is more than ample scope for services to be provided internationally. I have no doubt that TASNEEF will provide effective and efficient classification services in all areas to the marine and offshore sector in the UAE and the region by targeting the large number of established regional players. It would also greatly boost the country’s maritime services and will support other companies in this sector towards the development of a technically superior UAE national workforce.

“A great deal can be achieved through strategic partnerships with established classification societies by leveraging their access to experienced leadership, professional staff and for the application of cutting edge technology to promote productivity and efficiency,”  he said.

TASNEEF CEO Rashed Al Hebsi, said: "Today we celebrate the entry of the first commercial oil tanker in the registry of TASNEEF and are always looking for such strategic partnerships with Drydocks World and the Italian classification society RINA, to serve, various marine sectors locally and regionally.

"There are great opportunities and investments in the region, and we are determined to fulfill the demands in the highest standards and professionalism and our contribution to maritime safety and environment, reducing marine incidents and focusing in building qualified national capacity to fill the gap technically and technology," he said.

TASNEEF is offering a wide range of certification services including ship classification, statutory services, certification of materials and components, maritime and naval advisory and training. It has already received recognition from the IMO through the UAE's National Transport Authority, which represents the UAE at the IMO.
