GTT gets class approvals for liquid gases

GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz), a designer of LNG membrane containment systems has been awarded five Approvals in Principle (AIP) from class societies for the transportation of liquefied gases other than LNG.

The class societies are - ABS, BV, CCS, DNV GL and LR.

As an outcome of the US shale gas revolution, there is an abundant supply of ethane. Ethane must be transported to where it is needed, hence interest in this cargo is rising, resulting in the need for dedicated vessels, the company said.

GTT's existing Mark III technology is being enhanced to the transport gases other than LNG, including, ethane, ethylene, propane, butane and propylene.

Membrane technology is a viable solution for GTT cargo containment systems on very large ethane carriers (VLECs), the company claimed.

"These five AIPs awarded to GTT's, proven membrane technology and the recent order of six ethane carriers (VLECs) using this technology are major steps forward in demonstrating the suitability of the GTT membrane systems for transportation of multiple types of cryogenic gases in their liquid state," said Philippe Berterottière, GTT chairman and CEO.
