Hyundai extends 2-stroke licences

At a recent ceremony in Copenhagen, the engine & machinery division of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI-EMD) signed a contract to extend its 2-stroke licence agreement with MAN Diesel & Turbo (MDT).

This latest extension continues a low-speed collaboration that first began in 1976.

Thomas Knudsen, MDT’s senior vice president, head of low-speed, said: “MAN Diesel & Turbo has enjoyed a long working relationship with Hyundai, one that we are delighted to extend. Hyundai has always played a significant role in the development of 2-stroke innovation and, indeed, produces the full range of our low-speed portfolio. We look forward to inspiring each other for many years to come.” 

Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) and Hyundai have also signed an amendment to extend their current licence agreement for another 10 years.

This agreement covers the sale, manufacturing and servicing of WinGD low-speed marine engines. HHI is a long-standing member of the WinGD family of low-speed engine licensees.

Besides building many engines, HHI has, over the years, also contributed to the development of WinGD low-speed engines and built the first examples of new engine types, such as the RT-flex82C/ 82T and X92.

The extension of our licence co-operation agreement will enable us to strengthen our presence in the important South Korean shipbuilding market and ensures that in the years to come our customers will continue to benefit from the availability of competitive, high-quality fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly main propulsion engines for all merchant vessels built by shipyards in HHI territory; it also shows WinGD’s long term commitment to be a reliable and innovative partner to the Korean ship- and engine building industry,” said Martin Wernli, CEO, WinGD.
