MAIB to investigate Channel collision

Jul 07 2017

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has started a preliminary assessment of the collision between the Panamax bulker ‘Huayang Endeavour’ and the Valles-controlled MR ‘Seafrontier’ in the Dover traffic separation scheme on 1st July.

The accident occurred in UK territorial waters, but the vessels proceeded to Dunkirk (‘Huayang Endeavour’) and Antwerp (‘Seafrontier’), respectively, where they were met by MAIB inspectors.

The bulker was in ballast, while the MR was loaded with around 38,000 tonnes of fuel oil. There were no reports of pollution or injuries to either crew.

Both vessels are registered in Hong Kong.

The 2009-built 33,500 dwt chemical tanker ‘Chemroad Journey’ was refloated following three weeks spent aground off Vietnam.

The vessel’s owner, Japan-based shipping company Iino Kaiun Kaisha, has confirmed that there were no injuries or pollution reported following the grounding, which occurred on 10th June.

In late June, the local authorities appointed a salvage company and took the necessary measures to refloat the vessel.
