Parker Bestobell wins newbuilding tanker valve contract

Parker Bestobell Marine, part of Parker Hannifin’s instrumentation products division, has received its first order to supply cryogenic fuel gas valves for newbuild tankers.

The two 15,000-dwt ice-class 1A asphalt and bitumen tankers have been ordered by Canadian transport concern Groupe Desgagnés and will be built at the Besiktas shipyard in Turkey.

The ships will be equipped with dual-fuel engines allowing them to operate on LNG and fuel oil, via 600 cu m gas storage tanks fitted on deck. Once built, the vessels will serve the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence River.

Due to the low winter temperatures in Canada, the valves and actuators have been specified and will be modified to operate in temperatures as low as -40 deg C. Parker Bestobell’s cryogenic valves are designed to operate to temperatures as low as -196 deg C, the company claimed.

The company also won an order to supply cryogenic globe and check valves for the cargo handling systems on the Yamal series of Arctic LNGCs being built at DSME. These valves will be required to withstand winter temperatures as low as -54 deg C, as well as excessive build-up of ice.
